Dynamic assessment and mediated learning bridge the gap between assessment and intervention for education professionals.

They offer a range of strategies that supplement traditional methods and deliver unique practitioner insights – whether identifying cognitive skills that need strengthening; differentiating the curriculum for different needs; or advising on and supporting teaching.

This module will enable you to gain an in-depth foundational knowledge of the relevant theories, policies and research, and develop your ability to critique knowledge and existing practice.

Please note

This module is one of two complementary modules: Skills & Knowledge and Application & Reflection. They are worth 30 credits each.

You will need to complete this module first if you plan to take Application & Reflection next. You may also take this module on its own.

The module content

Strand one: Understanding intellectual development

  • Learn to critically appraise the multifarious approaches to understanding intellectual development.
  • Gain a practical and theoretical grounding in theories related to intellectual development that takes account of the environmental and socio-cultural aspects of learning development.

Strand two: Dynamic assessment, cognitive abilities and the individual learner

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of the range of cognitive abilities that the learner brings to their learning.
  • Identify the cognitive abilities of a learner.
  • Critically evaluate dynamic assessment as an assessment paradigm.
  • Identify and critique aspects of dynamic assessment practice as it impacts on anti-oppressive practice.

Strand three: Mediated learning and assessment of cognitive abilities

  • Familiarise yourself with the concept and practice of mediation – as a distinct aspect of Dynamic Assessment (DA) and a mechanism that makes an assessment interactive.
  • Get to grips with the way that cognitive abilities are shaped and supported during an assessment – one that enables the next learning steps to be more easily identified.
  • Examine the theoretical background and make full use of the opportunities for hands-on experience.

How will you be assessed?

You will need to produce:

  • Critical analysis one: Write a critical overview of static versus interactive assessment – with reference to anti-oppressive practice issues in assessment (2,500 words).
  • Critical analysis two: Produce a critical overview of the role of mediation in dynamic testing (2,000 words).
  • Reflective analysis: Observation of and reflection on a learner in order to identify the cognitive functions being used (1,500 words).

Where indicated by your tutor, you may submit multimedia resources that you have produced within your applied practice as part of your final portfolio of evidence.

Or do you require access to an education setting?

You will need to get written permission from a senior member of staff to regularly access a setting. We will show you the best way to do this, enabling you to carry out our learning activities in your chosen setting.

How much does it cost?

We offer a flexible range of fees to suit your finances:

  • Single payment of £1,200 + VAT.
  • Three monthly instalments of £425 + VAT.
  • Ten monthly instalments of £132 + VAT.
