The module content

Strand 1: The context for inclusive education

  • Explore the personal social and emotional development perspectives of those with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) in learning environments.
  • Develop your knowledge and understanding of the evolution of the definitions and perspectives of labels associated with SEBD.
  • Build on your understanding of the interplay between causal factors that commonly link with SEBD difficulties.
  • Explore the psychological theories that underpin the behaviours associated with SEBD.
  • Consider the role of educational establishments in recognising mental ill health among learners displaying SEBD.

Strand 2: The effective setting: policy, provision and interventions

  • Review the research on effective provision and interventions for learners with SEBD.
  • Examine the legislation and guidance on SEBD and understand how these can really help to contextualise a learner’s needs.
  • Discuss with your colleagues aspects of the learning environment and provision in your setting that support pupils with SEBD.
  • Develop a presentation for staff demonstrating your findings — drawn from published research and the perspectives of your staff colleagues.
  • Initiate a systemic review of the interventions and provision within your setting.

Strand 3: Developing a holistic framework to identify the needs of learners in your setting

  • Develop an evidence-based SEBD holistic framework that allows you to assess the needs and most appropriate interventions for vulnerable learners with SEBD difficulties in your setting.
  • Share it with your tutor and use it in consultation with a workplace colleague in your setting to support your understanding of the needs of an individual learner.
  • Learn how to confidently lead consultations with your colleagues using the SEBD holistic framework to generate a holistic understanding of the background, current context and presenting needs of a learner.
  • Lead on planning for appropriate interventions and provisions in your setting.

How will you be assessed?

You will need to produce:

  • Critical analysis 1: Write a piece on the historical perspective of SEBD and the implications for practice and provision (3,000 words).
  • Critical analysis 2: Produce an essay on the relationships between your setting and government guidance, legislation and recent research (3,000 words).

Where indicated by your tutor, you may submit multimedia resources that you have produced within your applied practice as part of your final portfolio of evidence.

Or do you require access to an education setting?

You will need to get written permission from a senior member of staff to regularly access a setting. We will show you the best way to do this, enabling you to carry out our learning activities in your chosen setting.
