Undertaking SENCO Responsibilities

If you book the National Award for SEN Coordination course, and are not working as the named SENCO in your setting, Real Training will ask for some extra assurances from you and your head of centre.

As the course is focused on practice-led learning and reflection on your own practice, we will seek confirmation that you will have access to the roles and opportunities that will enable you to gather the evidence required to meet the NASENCO Learning Outcomes, before accepting you onto the course. This will also require the support of your Head Teacher and Senior Leadership Team, as some of the tasks that you will be required to undertake may fall outside your existing role within the school. The NASENCO Learning Outcomes can be found here.

When you book you will be sent an additional online form to complete, with input from your Headteacher. The form allows you and your Head to review the course requirements and confirm that you will have appropriate support in your setting.

As an assistant SENCO / aspiring SENCO, we want to ensure that this course will meet your needs and that you will be able to be successful in your studies. The course has been designed primarily for new-to-role SENCOs and is competency-based. We need to ensure, before accepting you onto the course, that you will have access to the roles and opportunities that will enable you to gather the evidence required to meet the NASENCO Learning Outcomes.

Before you book please discuss the following with your Head Teacher and plan together how you will be supported for the duration of the course through having:

  • Access to whole-school SEND data (including financial), resources and policies
  • Opportunities to liaise and work with external agencies
  • Opportunities to influence and lead inclusive practice at a whole-school level
  • Sufficient time in your week made available to work on SEND activities and tasks as all of these will be required to complete the course.
